"Where is my wife?" he asked, speech slightly garbled.

I sighed. What could I say?

Because of Alzheimer's, he was locked in a chronic state of confusion. Unknowingly, he had pulled out his foley catheter, a tube that drains urine from his bladder. He had caused so much bladder trauma that he wouldn't stop bleeding. In addition to being confused and not knowing where he was, he was in a lot of pain and discomfort. He was, literally, a bloody mess.

(Your wife is dead.) I didn't say it. He wouldn't understand anyways.

"My wife.. I love her.. I love her.. I love my wife." he whispered, eyes closed.

It has been known that when one spouse dies, the other follows suit within six months. They die of a broken heart.

And since my specialty is geriatrics/gerontology, I have a lot of patients with Alzheimer's..

so sad.
i hope my wife passes away first so she won't have to deal with grief, then i pass away within a week so my grief will be short.
